Conservation International estimates a different species goes extinct every 20 minutes. These numbers could be grossly exaggerated, but it speaks to the point that earth is slowly losing its healthy biodiversity. For me, maintaining biodiversity isn’t some hippy-drum-circle aspiration. It is completely self serving and in the interest of human advancement. What if, out there in the unexplored regions of the Amazon or the bottom depths of the ocean where there are creatures capable of curing cancer or turning bettle shit into rocket fuel (it could happen)? We may not be able to save them all, but we should be redoubling our efforts to protect their habitats and identifying these organisms that could be a ‘god-send’ to us lowly humans.
